How to Rank in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

AI Overviews now sit at the top of many Google results, and AI Mode offers a full conversational search experience. Both summarise the answer and link to a selection of supporting pages. Being one of those links is the new page-one.

Google has published clear guidance on how these features choose content. This guide sticks to what Google has said, plus the practical tactics we see working.

Key takeaways

  • Google says there are no additional requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in Search.
  • Both features use “query fan-out” — multiple related searches across subtopics — so covering a topic thoroughly earns more chances to be linked.
  • Googlebot rules control AI Overviews. Google-Extended does not affect Search features.
  • AI Overview and AI Mode traffic is reported in Search Console under the Web search type.
  • Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet only if you want to limit what appears.

How AI Overviews and AI Mode choose pages

According to Google, to be eligible as a supporting link a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements and no special AI files or schema needed. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

Both features may use a technique Google calls query fan-out: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. As the answer is generated, Google identifies more supporting pages, so the links shown can be broader than the classic top ten results.

AI Overviews only appear when Google decides they add value beyond classic results, and AI Mode may use different models, so the links in each can differ. Google states that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality.

Step-by-step: how to rank on Google AI Overviews

  1. 1

    Confirm indexing and snippet eligibility

Use Search Console’s URL Inspection to confirm key pages are indexed and that no nosnippet or max-snippet:0 rules are blocking snippets. Fix crawl errors, canonicals and rendering issues first.

  2. 2

Map the fan-out around each topic

For each core query, list the related sub-questions Google is likely to search: definitions, costs, comparisons, steps, pros and cons, “for beginners”, “for businesses”. Look at People Also Ask and related searches for clues.

  3. 3

    Answer each sub-question directly

Use the sub-questions as headings and give a concise answer immediately underneath, followed by depth. This makes individual passages easy for Google to pull into a generated answer.

  4. 5

    Show first-hand experience and expertise

Include original photos, data, examples, author bios and real-world testing. Google’s guidance emphasises helpful, reliable, people-first content.

  5. 6

Make structured data match visible content

Use schema.org markup (Article, Product, Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQ) and make sure every value matches what users see on the page. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile data current.

  6. 7

Support text with images and video

Google recommends supporting text with high-quality images and videos. Visual assets with descriptive alt text and captions can strengthen relevance for multimodal queries.

  7. 8

Measure in Search Console and analytics

AI feature traffic is included in Search Console’s Performance report (Web). Pair it with conversions and engagement in analytics, and manually track which of your target queries show your link.

Common mistakes that keep brands out of Google AI Overviews

  • Looking for a special “AI Overview schema” — Google says none is required.
  • Blocking Google-Extended expecting it to remove you from AI Overviews (it doesn’t).
  • Writing one long page that never directly answers the sub-questions people actually search.
  • Structured data that contradicts the visible page, which undermines trust.

How to measure your Google AI Overviews visibility

  • Search Console Performance (Web) impressions and clicks for queries that trigger AI Overviews.
  • A manual or tool-based log of which tracked queries show an AI Overview and whether you are linked.
  • Engagement and conversion rate of organic Google traffic in analytics.
  • Coverage of sub-topics across your content hub.

Google AI Overviews ranking FAQ

What do I need to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google says there are no additional requirements. Your page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. From there, helpful content, clear structure and authority determine whether you are selected.

Is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

Yes. AI Overviews appear on standard results pages when Google thinks they add value. AI Mode is a dedicated conversational search experience. They may use different models and techniques, so the links can differ.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?

You can limit what Google shows using nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet. These apply to all snippets in Search, not only AI features. Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews.

Does ranking #1 guarantee an AI Overview link?

No. Because of query fan-out, AI Overviews can link to pages beyond the classic top results, and a top-ranking page may not be linked. Covering sub-topics well increases your chances.

How do I track AI Overview traffic?

Google includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in Search Console’s Performance report under the Web search type. It is not broken out separately, so combine it with query-level tracking.
